Celebrating Older People
This week we celebrate our senior generations on two special days. Tomorrow (1st October) is the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, an annual event to raise awareness of the opportunities and challenges faced by ageing populations, and to mobilise the wider community to address the difficulties they face.
This year’s theme is “The part we play”: Celebrating the integral role of older people in our communities; these roles can be as employees, volunteers, activists – the possibilities are endless. From organising the flowers at the local church to campaigning about local issues or manning the community speedwatch camera, older people are ensuring that the areas in which they live can benefit from their time, commitment and knowledge.
On Sunday (6th) it is the turn of Silver Sunday, a national day where people of all generations can come together by hosting fun and free activities for older people. This year for the first time Silver Sunday is being organised by Age UK, who have taken over the running of the event.
Both days are very important to Elliscombe House, as they are an opportunity for society to celebrate older people as much as we do every day!
